Sunday Scoops 04/02/23

It’s Sunday, which means it's time to talk about all the gaming news this week

By: Evan1Sonic. This week has been a big one for news, with this year’s E3 being canceled, Forspoken and Vampire Survivors both getting new DLC, and more.

Farewell E3. As first reported by IGN and followed by an official confirmation, E3 has been canceled this year. This is sad news, as for over a decade, E3 was the go-to summer games conference. After 2020 and the push to digital events, there hasn’t been a proper E3 since 2019 despite plans to bring back the event each year. The ESA released this statement about the cancellation. “This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3. We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn’t overcome. For those who did commit to E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t put on the showcase you deserve and that you’ve come to expect from ReedPop’s event experiences.” Geoff Keighley rose to fill the gap that E3 has left these past few years and created Summer Games Fest in 2020, which continues to grow year after year. This event will continue as planned and air live this year on June 8th. As the official Twitter account for Summer Game Fest states, “Video game summer is still happening.” Many, such as myself, could never attend E3 in the past and may never get the chance to now. There's always the chance that the ESA will attempt to bring E3 back in 2024 for a grand return, and ReedPop and the ESA have confirmed that they will continue to work together on “future E3 events,” but I think this might be the end of the legendary legacy of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay Revealed. Earlier this week, Nintendo released a thirteen-minute gameplay reveal for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This in-depth look showcased Link’s new powers, a somewhat changed world, and more. Some of those new abilities include recall, which serves as a rewind that you can use to propel objects back in time; ascend, which sends you swimming through a ceiling to the land above it; and fuse, which you can use to merge objects to create vehicles as well as weapons. Rounding out the video announcements, special-themed accessories and a system were disclosed. The Tears of the Kingdom-themed Switch OLED console is coming on April 28th, 2023, followed by a pro controller and carrying case on May 12th, 2023. This gameplay reveal, which you can watch here, greatly highlights the next chapter in Link’s epic journey. I can’t wait to return to the land of Hyrule, and after everything I’ve learned here, I’m thinking of the possibilities I’ll now have with those new powers. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases for the Nintendo Switch on May 12th, 2023.
