Sunday Scoops 05/21/23

It’s Sunday, which means it's time to talk about all the gaming news this week

By: Evan1Sonic. This week has been a steady one for news, with Mortal Kombat 1 being revealed, a new PlayStation Showcase getting announced, Overwatch 2’s PvE mode turning out to be scrapped, and more.

The newest entry in the Mortal Kombat series has been revealed. After quite a few teases over the past few weeks, the first trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 has been released. The trailer for this soft reboot, which you can watch here, showcased a more grounded tone as well as a ton of blood and guts, as expected from the series. Following the events of Mortal Kombat 11, Liu Kang has attained godhood and decided to create a whole new universe, with fresh interpretations of Sub-Zero, Kitana, Mileena, Johnny Cage, and more. While gameplay hasn’t been shown yet, according to the game’s FAQ, the title will feature “a new fighting system, game modes, bone-crushing finishing moves, and more.” Also, rollback netcode is here for online matches. A PS5 and Xbox Series X/S beta is coming this August, and those that purchase the Premium or Kollector’s Edition of the game also get early access to the game beginning on September 14th, 2023. This soft reboot with “reimagined versions of iconic characters as they’ve never been seen before, along with a new fighting system, game modes, bone krushing finishing moves, and more” is looking great. Mortal Kombat 1 releases on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC on September 19th, 2023.

PlayStation Showcase announced for the end of May. Earlier this week, Sony announced that their next PlayStation Showcase will air this Wednesday. According to the PlayStation Blog, the event will run a bit over an hour and will be “focusing on PS5 and PS VR2 games in development from top studios from around the world.” The blog post states to “expect a glimpse at several new creations from PlayStation Studios, as well as spellbinding games from our third-party partners and indie creators.” This new look at what’s coming to PlayStation platforms in the future will stream live Wednesday, May 24th, at 1pm Pacific Time/9pm British Time here. The last PlayStation Showcase was aired in September 2021 and featured game announcements such as Marvel’s Wolverine, the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2. This event was the first we ever covered at Elevate Games, and I’m excited to see what will be shown at the new showcase.
