What Ya Playing 02/16/22
Sifu is a fighting action-adventure game from Sloclap. I've played the game for over eight hours and got to the end of the third area so far. This game, while not perfect, is truly remarkable. The combat is incredible and continues to get better and better as I unlock and learn new things. You can feel each punch and kick on PS5 with the Dualsense, especially when/if you turn the vibrations up (in the options). While the game is hard, with little room for mistakes in places, it's very satisfying once you overcome each challenge. Each of the levels looks and feels wonderful, from the club to the museum. Every time you die in one of these levels, you get older. You start in your 20s, with each death pushing you back until the age of 75 when you'll hit the game over screen. Whatever age you finish a level at is what age you'll start the next level with. This encourages you to revisit earlier levels to beat them with as few deaths as possible, something I dislike. The story is a simple revenge tale that's enjoyable but hasn't blown me away yet. With wonderful gameplay and stylish levels, Sifu is an incredible title. I haven't loved a game as much as I have with Sifu in ages, and I have no doubt that I'll continue to play it. Sifu is available on the PS4, PS5, and PC.
The Gunk is an action-adventure game from the creators of Steamworld. I rolled credits on the game, and I'm happy that I did. In The Gunk, you control Ronnie, a member of a two-person group of space explorers looking to make it rich when they discover uncharted land. The upgrades you unlock throughout the game rarely feel like big improvements, and as a whole just feel unnecessary. Some of them, such as the ability to sprint, feel like they should have been things you had at the start. The platforming is fine, with only a few sections that will test your abilities sprinkled about. Sucking up gunk and the satisfying feeling you get when doing so is the highlight of the game. Even though I had low expectations, the story was great. I liked all of the characters, and while I couldn't get to know them as well as I would have liked, I felt connected to them by the time the game ended. The game as a whole is above average. This is a short game that takes three to four hours to finish and is perfect as a palate cleanser between bigger titles. The Gunk is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Dying Light 2 Stay Human is a parkour-focused open-world RPG game from Techland. I've played the game for around eight hours so far and have completed seven of the main missions. Parkour is the biggest part of this game, and it feels wonderful even though it took me a while to get used to it. Unfortunately, the combat is very unentertaining so far. Blocking, counterattack, and dodging are all part of the simple melee combat system. This system is not awful, but it's also not that enjoyable. This is my first experience with the Dying Light series, and I'm loving it. While the combat isn’t very enjoyable, the parkour and RPG elements make it well worth playing. I intend to keep playing, but with Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring releasing in the coming weeks, I don't see how I'll be able to make time for Dying Light 2. If you'd like to read more about this game, you can check out my First Impressions here. Dying Light 2 Stay Human is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Switch version coming soon.
I’d love to hear about what games you’ve been playing recently, so please send your submissions either to my email: elevategamesmail@gmail.com or to the What Ya Playing text channel in the Elevate Games Discord server, which you can join here. You can either tell me just the name of a game you've been playing or a bunch of text explaining what you enjoy (or don't) about that game. I look forward to hearing about what games you've been playing. Thanks.
