What Ya Playing Wednesday
By: Evan1Sonic. It's Wednesday, which means it's time to talk about the games you and I have played over the past week. More information about where to send your submissions to be featured in the series will be at the bottom of this post. This week I finished VVVVVV, Dredge, and the Sea of Stars demo. Without further ado, it’s time for the first What Ya Playing of the year.
Dredge is an adventure RPG game from Black Salt Games. I’ve finished this game and had a really great time with it. At the game’s core is the fun and calming act of fishing for a fresh catch. The minigames used to accompany this act always felt rewarding and were fun to execute. While catching the same fish over and over gets repetitive, the variety of marine animals you’ll find and the engaging minigames attempt to help break the repetitiveness. Once you have your fish caught, it's time to store them in your hull. Similar to Resident Evil 4, your inventory has a limited number of slots to fit items. Using each slot to your advantage is how you can excel as an angler and get maximum profit. I loved this part of the game, and the Tetris-like organizing of the inventory was outstanding. Occasionally, repetitive fishing and monotonous navigation can drag the adventure down a bit, but not enough to warrant frustration. My favorite part of the title is its fantastic nightly dread, which nails the feeling of being lost at sea wonderfully. If you’d like to learn more about the game, I wrote a full review of it that you can read here. Whether you are a fishing game fanatic, a lover of light horror, or ready for the next big indie of the year, look no further. I would also like to express my thanks to Team17 for providing a review code. Dredge is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.
Quick Play is this section of What Ya Playing where I share some of my short thoughts on games I’ve been playing lately.
VVVVVV. I replayed this 2D platformer game. I adore this title, and I often return to it to play a section or two. From the fantastic music to the smooth-feeling gameplay, it's wild that it was first released over a decade ago and still really holds up. If you’ve never given VVVVVV a try, you’re missing out on one of my favorite platformers.
The Sea of Stars demo. I finished this title’s demo and am now eagerly anticipating its full release. Great music and beautiful visuals are the title’s highlights, alongside solid combat and a fine cast of characters. This Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG-inspired RPG is shaping up to be an incredible game, and I can’t wait to play more.
You can send your submissions to be featured on the next What Ya Playing to our email: contact@elevategames.net. You can submit the name of a game/s you've been playing and a bunch of text explaining what you enjoy (or don't enjoy) about that/these game/s if you’re fancy. I look forward to hearing about the game/s you've been playing. Thanks.
