What Ya Playing 05/17/23
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an action-adventure game from Nintendo. I’m about eight hours into my adventure currently. Before starting Link’s new adventure, I had doubts that this sequel could rival its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, but I think I’ve been proven wrong. The highlight of Links's original adventure is the sense of discovery and freedom that the game provides. This title expands on that feeling with new abilities like Ultrahand and Fuse, allowing you to create nearly anything your mind can think up. While I mostly made cars and flying machines, there were a lot of tools provided, and I feel that the only thing holding me back is my imagination. Sometimes my Ultrahand masterpieces rocketed off into the sky without me or surprised me by completely failing to work as I originally expected them to. Each time this has happened, I can’t help but let out a chuckle and brush it off with an “oh well, guess I’ll try…” and a smile. I found it a bit hard to adjust from the Breath of the Wild way of thinking and remember there’s another way you can approach this challenge, but the more I play, the easier I find it to avoid the urge to climb or push through every roadblock. I won’t go into spoilers, but the story of this new chapter is wonderful and has been more compelling to me so far than the first game. I’ve mostly spent my time exploring Hyrule and the sky islands above while also checking off a main mission here or there. This is due to the fact that there’s loads of side content to stumble on. From new shrines that test your new abilities and familiar Koroks to find, to fierce foes and big surprises. It’s remarkable how much content is here; I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m still exploring this version of Hyrule well past the end of this year. This new chapter in Link’s Adventure is truly remarkable, and I can’t wait to play more of it. If you have yet to play this title, you have an incredible gaming experience ahead of you. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available on the Nintendo Switch.
Quick Play is this section of What Ya Playing where I share some of my short thoughts on games I’ve been playing lately.
Redfall. I’m over nine hours in, and so far I’ve had a fine time shooting up vampires and helping out the locals. Gameplay is where this title excels. Arkane always delivers on this front, but everything with the gunplay feels wonderful to perform in this title. The story, however, leaves something to be desired and at times just feels bland and generic. While the game is a ways away from perfection, the gameplay is incredible, as is to be expected from Arkane, and keeps me coming back for more session after session.
Death or Treat. I’ve played a lot of this action roguelike title and have been having a fine time. A great art style, handpainted environments, and animated cutscenes all make this title a beauty. Slightly rough controls and little happening in the sound department, however, are significant disappointments. If you’re in a spooky mood or have been searching for a new roguelike title to sink your teeth into, give Scary’s Adventure a try. Read our full quick review of the game here.
