Sunday Scoops 08/27/23

It’s Sunday, which means it's time to talk about all the newest gaming news this week

By: Evan1Sonic. This week has been a big one for news, with news from the recent Gamescom Opening Night Live, Ghostrunner 2 locking in an October release date, and more.

News from the recent Gamescom Opening Night Live. The Gamescom Opening Night Live event that aired live on August 22nd featured a sizeable number of games. Some examples of those include Mortal Kombat 1 and Starfield. A few other highlights comprise of Sonic Superstars locking in an October 17th, 2023 release date, the gameplay reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Tekken 8 being revealed to be coming on January 26th, 2024. A surprise was the reveal and confirmation that Little Nightmares 3 and Streets of Rogue 2 will both be launching in 2024. To round out the event, a new Alan Wake 2 trailer premiered, along with confirming the new release date of October 27th, 2023. This lengthy gaming event provided a fine look at what to expect in the near future of gaming. You can watch the full event here.

More Project Q, now known as the PlayStation Portal, details have been revealed. Earlier this week, PlayStation announced that Project Q now has an official name, PlayStation Portal. This device will feature an 8-inch LCD screen that’s capable of 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second. There won’t be any local play with this handheld, sadly, not even media playback. It’s purely a remote-play device, through and through. While a specific number hasn’t been revealed, PlayStation is targeting the same battery life as its Dualsense controllers. While a 3.5mm audio jack for wired headphones is part of the hardware, there won’t be any Bluetooth audio support for wireless headsets. However, PlayStation Link-compatible tech, including the newly announced PlayStation Pulse Explore wireless earbuds and the new Pulse Elite headset, can be paired and used wirelessly in tandem with the Portal. It’s also worth noting that games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming will not be supported. PlayStation describes this device as “the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal.” The PlayStation Portal will retail for $199.99 when it launches later this year. While I doubt I’ll purchase one of those for myself, it looks to be a great dedicated remote-play handheld for PS5 owners.
