PlayStation State of Play March 2022 Recap

By: Evan1Sonic. From Exoprimal to Valkyrie Elysium, here is a recap of all of the games shown at this month's PlayStation State of Play. All of the release dates listed here are for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 specifically.

Exoprimal is an online team-based action game from Capcom. In this game set in the near future of 2040, players don state-of-the-art exosuits and go head-to-head with overwhelming hordes of dinosaurs. Form a five-person team and compete online with other teams to be the first to defeat their enemies and complete their missions. Choose from three types of exosuit roles: assault, which uses an array of attacks to defeat enemies; tank, which protects teammates by drawing out enemy attacks; and support, which can do things like heal allies and weaken opponents. You can also switch exosuits at any time, though this will leave you vulnerable for a short period of time. Fight T. Rex, raptors, pteranodons, and more when Exoprimal comes to PS4 and PS5 in 2023.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is an open-world RPG action-adventure game from Tango Gameworks. In the blink of an eye, almost all of Tokyo’s living population has vanished as beings from myth, folklore, and urban legend manifest all over the city. You take on the role of Akito, a survivor of the disappearance. To get to the bottom of this world-shattering phenomenon and put its perpetrator, Hannya, to justice, you'll partner up with a ghostly detective named KK. Ruin Hannya's plans and save Tokyo when Ghostwire: Tokyo launches on PS5 on March 25th, 2022.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is an action RPG souls-like game from Team Ninja. This title is receiving another free demo on PlayStation consoles. You can go through the first three stages of the game in this demo, from the beginning of the game to the Western Keep. You can also play the multiplayer mode with other players in the trial. This demo is now available, and you can carry over your progress from the trial to the full game when it launches. Defeat Chaos and free the land of darkness when Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin launches on PS4 and PS5 on March 15th, 2022.

Forspoken is an open-world action RPG game from Luminous Productions. You play as Frey Holland, a young woman who is transported from New York City to the fantasy world of Athia. To traverse this world, you can run, jump, use skills such as riding on a magical surfboard, and more. Use magical powers to journey through Athia and survive in order to find your way home when Forspoken comes to PS5 on October 11th, 2022.

Gundam Evolution is a first-person team-based shooter game from Bandai Namco Online. Engage in 6v6 combat in three objective-based game modes: Point Capture, Domination, and Destruction. You play as classic Gundam units, each with their own set of offensive and defensive skills. There are a lot of characters to choose from, with a starting roster of 12 units and more unlockable suits available through earnable in-game or paid currency. There will also be season passes with unlockable cosmetics such as weapon and unit skins. A closed network test for the game will be coming at a future date. Emerge victorious in this free-to-play shooter when Gundam Evolution comes to PS4 and PS5 in 2022. 

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a collection of thirteen classic TMNT titles from Digital Eclipse. The following games are included in this collection: TMNT (Arcade), TMNT (NES), TMNT: Turtles in Time (Arcade), TMNT 2: The Arcade Game (NES), TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project (NES), TMNT: Tournament Fighters (NES), TMNT 4: Turtles in Time (SNES), TMNT: Tournament Fighters (Super NES), TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist (Sega Genesis), TMNT: Tournament Fighters (Sega Genesis), TMNT: Fall of The Foot Clan (Game Boy), TMNT 2: Back From The Sewers (Game Boy), and TMNT 3: Radical Rescue (Game Boy). You can now save at any time, modify your button mapping, and play boss rush and challenge modes. Some of the games will also feature online/coop play. Play through some of your favorite TMNT games with visual updates and additional content (artwork and more) when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection comes to PS4 and PS5 in 2022.

Gigabash is an action-fighting brawler game from Passion Republic Games. Play as one of ten unique characters inspired by Tokusatsu kaijus and heroes in this arena brawler. Play with your friends in couch co-op or solo. Partake in mini-games, short story modes, and online play when Gigabash launches in early 2022 on PS4 and PS5.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R is a fighting game from CyberConnect2. The game features updated gameplay and visuals, along with new audio recordings from the Part 6 anime voice actors. Battle in either All Star Battle Mode, Arcade Mode, Online Mode, Versus Mode, Practice Mode, or Gallery Mode. Pick from one of fifty characters from all arcs and duke it out when JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R hits PS4 and PS5 this fall. 

Trek to Yomi is a 2D action side-scrolling game from Leonard Manchiari and Flying Wild Hog. Assume the role of Hiroki, a young swordsman, and keep the promise you made to your dying master. This title is based on Kurosawa films and looks stunning. Protect your town from warriors, swamp creatures, and other threats when Trek to Yomi arrives on PS4 and PS5 in spring 2022.

Returnal Ascension is a new update to the third-person shooter roguelike game Returnal from Housemarque. This update brings online campaign co-op as well as a new mode named the Tower of Sisyphus. This new mode is an infinite mode in which you must ascend the tower to the highest point possible. The climb has no end, and you are doomed to die as the tower becomes increasingly difficult the higher you climb. This mode will also feature a new boss. Compete against your friends and the rest of the world for the highest rank and play the campaign with others when this new update hits PS5 on March 22, 2022.

The Dio Field Chronicle is a tactical RPG strategy game from Lancarse Ltd and Square Enix. Set in a fantasy world, the Kingdom of Alletain has been called to combat after remaining untouched by the conflict between the forces of the Rowetale Alliance and the Trovel-Schoevian Empire. Rather than the typical turn-based fighting found in most tactics games, this game employs a real-time system. This system is dubbed the Real-Time Tactical Battle system, or RTTB. Save your homeland from invading forces and engage in RTTB battles when The Dio Field Chronicle arrives on PS4 and PS5 in 2022.

Valkyrie Elysium is an action RPG game from Soleil and Square Enix. With this new release, the classic Valkyrie series returns. The All-Father produces a lone Valkyrie in the distant past, as Ragnarok looms over the realms. If she so chooses, this Valkyrie can be the salvation of this doomed world. A new, fast-paced combat system that blends strategy, action, and a unique combo system is employed in this title. Discover the cause of the approaching Ragnarok as the Valkyrie when Valkyrie Elysium launches on PS4 and PS5 in 2022.

This event, while not one I really enjoyed, was a great look at what games are coming to Sony's platforms in the near future. My favorite game shown at this event was The Dio Field Chronicle. After Triangle Strategy, I'm in a tactics mood, and this looks like an exciting iteration of the genre. You can watch the full event here.
